LED is a kind of reliable source of LCD backlight. The characteristics of LED determine the color gamut and brightness of LCD TV. At present, the mainstream of white LED mainly uses blue chip coated with YAG(Yttrium Aluminum Garnet) phosphor to get white light, which can only guarantee the color gamut to 60~70%NTSC. Quantum dot displays are an emerging technology with the potential to fundamentally change the competition between LCD and OLED display technologies. It is based on a conventional LCD display system, using a layer of quantum dots incorporated into the LCD module.This Quantum Dot Backlight solution can get the higher color purity and color gamut, which will be 100% NTSC at least. This technique has been applied to a LCD TV.

Quantum dots are a kind of nanomaterials, which are called quantum dots in nanometer grades.The material is made to the size of the quantum dots, the tiny semiconductor can emit light after excitation. Scientists have found that when the quantum dot diameter is smaller, the smaller the wavelength of the light after excitation (→ Blue), the larger the diameter, the longer the wavelength of the excited light (→ Red). By this feature we can control the size of quantum dots, issued blue, green and red 3 colors of light.
Quantum dots are extremely narrow after excitation, that is called solid color. Higher color purity can produce richer colors and improve wider gamut and saturation.
